Frequently Asked Questions
Check out the following Questions and Answers to help determine if AHIP is right for you.
Can I join AHIP if I’m eligible for coverage under my spouse’s policy?
No. If you’re eligible for any other group health plan, you may not join AHIP.
My spouse and I would like to enroll, do we complete separate applications?
Yes. Each adult has their own policy with AHIP; therefore, separate applications are required.
Can a child be covered under AHIP without an adult?
Yes, if the child was covered as an eligible dependent on your policy or your spouse's separate policy. An AHIP insured adult has 30 days after the birth or adoption of a child to add the child to their AHIP policy.
How can I enroll my family for coverage under the plan?
AHIP does not offer a family policy, but your spouse may enroll under a separate policy and either one of you may enroll your dependent children, but both of you can’t cover them.
Can I enroll in AHIP if I am coming from an individual policy?
No. Your last coverage must have been provided from a group plan.
How do I know if my doctor participates in AHIP?
You’ll be given a toll-free number to call when you receive your information packet.
Must I go to certain hospitals and physicians on AHIP?
If you enroll in AHIP's Managed Care Plan you must see a participating provider with United Health Care. If you enroll in our Traditional Indemnity Plan you can see any doctor or hospital. However, if the facility or physician is not a Blue Cross provider you may have to file the claim yourself.
Does AHIP cover you when you are traveling out of state?
The Managed Care Plan will cover you only for an emergency out of state. The Traditional Indemnity Plan will pay what is reasonable and customary.
If I move out of state can I keep my AHIP coverage?
No. State law mandates that only Alabama residents are eligible for the plan. Verification of residence is required at times by AHIP.
Can I enroll in AHIP if I can’t get coverage anywhere else?
No. AHIP is not intended to cover everyone who cannot get health insurance. It is specifically aimed at those who have purchased coverage from their employer and whose benefits have run out.
Can I enroll in AHIP if I’ve been without coverage for 63 or more days?
No.
My insurance company has not yet sent a Certificate of Creditable Coverage to me, should I hold my application until I receive it?
No. Mail or fax your application to this office a month before your desired effective date. Mail or fax the Certificate to our office when you receive it.
If I send my application in without the certificate and it takes a month or more to provide this document, am I responsible for premiums from my request effective date?
Yes, even if no claims were incurred during this time period.
How do I find out more?
